Buy tools by the gaps they close, not by the demo. The problem is real. In a [2025 Gartner survey](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-07-31-gartner-survey-shows-just-26-percent-of-job-applicants-trust-ai-will-fairly-evaluate-them) of 3,000 job candidates, 6% admitted to interview fraud, and Gartner expects one in four candidate profiles to be fake by 2028. Every tool does what it says. The risk is what it does not see. Quick Answer Candidate fraud detection software falls into seven types: application checks, device and location signals, interview integrity, ID document checks, liveness checks, background checks and post-hire monitoring. Each one covers part of the hiring process. Map what you already run, fill the empty stages first, and make sure the results are compared with each other. ## Who needs this You are shopping for a tool if any of these sound familiar: - You hire remote engineers or other roles with access to customer data - A recent hire did not match the person you interviewed - Your security team asked how you confirm who you are hiring - You have three demos booked and no way to compare them ## What each type of tool catches, and misses - **Application checks.** Catch made-up work histories and the same resume or phone number under different names. Miss a real career used by someone else. - **Device and location signals.** Catch location claims that do not add up. Miss anyone with a believable connection, and honest people use VPNs too. - **Interview integrity.** Catch manipulated video or voice and off-screen help, the signs the [FBI warned about in 2022](https://www.ic3.gov/PSA/2022/psa220628). Miss a real person interviewing in someone else's name. - **ID document checks.** Catch forged or altered IDs. Miss whether the holder is the person you interviewed. - **Liveness checks.** Catch photos, masks and replayed video at the moment of the check. Miss everything before and after it. - **Background checks.** Validate the record of the identity you were given. Miss an identity that belongs to someone else and leaves no trace. - **Post-hire monitoring.** Catch a swap after day one and remote-control software. Miss everything before access is granted. No single type covers that span. ## What to ask in every demo - **Ask what it misses.** A vendor who can name the blind spot understands the product. - **Ask what a flag looks like.** A score with no reasons leaves your recruiter guessing what to check next. - **Ask what happens after a wrong flag.** A flag should trigger verification, never an automatic rejection, with the same checks for everyone in a role. - **Ask how accuracy is tested, and on whom.** It should work equally well across different groups of people. Test it on your own past hires before you sign. - **Ask what data it keeps.** What the candidate shares, for how long, and who sees it. Have your lawyer read this part.
